Last night I stumbled across a blog called Heart Hands Home and a recipe for a homemade Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal Mix. We go through a lot of oatmeal in this house, so you can imagine how excited I was to find one that I could make from scratch!
This mix smells so good and the best part is it is so simple to make! I am look forward to making several different versions!
Here it is; my notes are in italics:
Brown Sugar Oatmeal Mix
adapted from Heart Hands Home, click here to see the original recipe
This recipe has been quadrupled. We have posted the original measurements at the bottom of the page for your convenience.
4 cups quick oats (grind oats in blender or food processor till finely ground) – we used oat flour
4 cups quick whole oats – we used a mixture of some we had on hand and Bob’s Red Mill GF Oats
2 cups packed brown sugar – UPDATE: The mix needed more sugar to even out the spices. We recommended adding 3 to 4 cups of brown sugar.
4 Tbsp maple flavoring, preferably powder – we omitted this and will be adding this later when we make the oatmeal
4 tsp salt
4 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp nutmeg
Because I am a bit of a simpleton and really don’t like doing dishes, I poured all the ingredients, minus the maple flavoring, into a medium airtight container and mixed it with a combination of a wooden spoon and shaking – with the lid on, of course 🙂 After a few minutes of shaking/stirring the mix was thoroughly combined and smelled amazing!
Here is another way to mix it:
Combine brown sugar, maple flavoring, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Stir thoroughly to combine the sugar and extract. Add in oats and ground oats. Stir to combine. Store in an airtight container.
To serve, scoop 2/3 cup of mix into a bowl and add hot water.
VOILA! You’re done! I love it!
For extra flavor add a 1/8 tsp of vanilla and dried apples into your bowl for Apple Vanilla Brown Sugar or stir in a 1/4-1/2 tsp of maple syrup for Maple Brown Sugar
Makes: A TON – Heart Hands Home recommends packaging in individual baggies for quick, single servings sizes.
1 c quick oats, ground into a fine powder
1 c whole quick oats
3/4-1 c brown sugar
1 Tbsp maple flavoring, preferably powder
2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Follow the directions above.
